 skaia - pronounced [sky]-ah.

skaia meaning earthsea and life. Our name places an emphasis on how we value our planet earth. skaia is a Scottish brand founded in 2019, with a mission to help protect our planet and create a sustainable future for fashion. We are extremely passionate about minimising our environmental impact and reducing consumer waste. Dare to be bold? Join us in creating a circular economy and help clean up our oceans.

Each skaia product is created from an innovative and sustainable material that regenerates waste nylon and fishing nets collected from the ocean. skaia is helping to 'close the loop' by cleaning up our oceans. We do this by ensuring we are not adding any additional waste to our planet, in turn helping protect eco-systems and sea life.

This discarded nylon is collected, regenerated and turned into an amazing, breathable fabric which is used to create skaia swimwear. We have all seen the devastating impact that plastic waste has on our planet. Between 8 and 14 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans every year with 88% of our sea’s surface now covered with plastic. Currently, we have 165 million tonnes of plastic within marine environments. How has plastic pollution impacted marine life? 100% of turtles, 59% of whales, 36% of seals and 40% of seabirds have been affected, with over 700 species in danger of extinction. Not only is this affecting our marine life, but also threatening human life. 70% of the planets oxygen is created from marine plants and 30% of our CO2 is absorbed by our oceans. Therefore, influencing the level of toxicity in our air and ecosystem.

What is ghost fishing?

Ghost fishing nets are discarded fishing nets left in our oceans acting as a massive trap for marine life and coral reefs. These fishing nets entangle fish, turtles, dolphins, sharks, seals and so much more. This restricts movement, causing injuries and death to marine life.

It is our duty as a company and fellow consumers to consciously buy quality goods that do not harm the environment. By choosing to purchase one of our skaia unique pieces, you are taking the first step in contributing to a sustainable future for the fashion industry.

We want all of our customers to feel comfortable and beautiful in their skaia swimwear piece. Each product has been carefully designed with a breathable fabric to make sure it fits and feels amazing whether you are swimming, chilling by the pool or partying at a beach club. skaia swimwear is twice as resistant to suntan lotions, oils and chlorine than regular nylon which helps to maintain their beauty and colour over time.

Each quality skaia piece is designed to last and is an investment piece! To protect the beauty and longevity of your skaia swimwear, please hand wash only. Please also note that skaia swimwear is not suitable for tumble dryers.

As part of our sustainability mission, we have ensured that all of our materials used for sourced sustainably. We source from and support local UK suppliers for our sustainable packaging. We have went one step further to ensure that our delivery bags are made from sustainable materials and are fully recyclable, biodegradable, plastic free and climate neutral. All parts of your skaia packaging can be recycled. This ensures that we are not adding unnecessary waste to our planet and is one step closer to closing the loop within the fashion industry.
